Summer Grape and Melon Slush


An original high-energy food like the grape is a great option for concocting the perfect summer slush.  Simply add your favorite melon, some ice and voila! You’ve got yourself a purple phytonutrient powerhouse.

Red grapes are used in this recipe because they are loaded with a phytonutrient called resveratrol. The best sources reside in the skin of purple/red grapes offering many health-promoting benefits* green grapes can’t match. Some benefits of this potent plant pigment may be applied to the prevention and/or treatment of:

  • neurodegenerative diseases*
  • cancer prevention*
  • cardiovascular disease*

Other food sources of resveratrol include: blueberries, bilberries, and cranberries and peanuts, cocoa.

For extra nutrition add spinach and spirulina for iron, chlorophyll and protein for a super slushi boost. The Vitamin C in grapes increases the body’s ability to absorb the non-heme iron found in spinach. The cholorphyll helps with everything from enhancing immunity, easing allergies to lowering cholesterol and removing toxins.

Finally, it’s important to note the Environmental Working Group (a consumer advocate and protection non-profit research organization) listed grapes as one of the 12 most contaminated fruits with pesticides. It is best to purchase organic when possible.

The Goods

  • 2 cups seedless purple grapes
  • 1 cup honeydew melon (watermelon or cantalope work well too)
  • 2 cups crushed ice
  • 1/2 cup of spinach (optional)
  • 1 tsp spirulina (optional)

The Magic:

STEP 1: Add all ingredients into a blender. If adding spinach and/or spirulina the color will change significantly to dark green.

STEP 2: Blend and serve.
